theAudition - Controversy Loves Company

Look out Fall Out Boy, there’s another Chicago pop sensation brewing. TheAudition’s Victory Records release Controversy Loves Company is one of the best “pop-punk” releases to hit the landscape since From Under the Cork Tree. TheAudition has given us a sound that’s hook filled, yet uniquely real. It doesn’t sound manufactured with hopes to move hundreds of thousands of records.

The slick intro, combined with the sing-a-long capabilities of “It’s too Late” will have kids eating Controversy up like candy. “The Ultimate Cover Up” overflows with a magnetism that makes it an easy track to get into, while “Don’t be so Hard” boasts progressive drums and a sound that parallels The All-American Rejects.

Danny Stevens’ vocals bounce from pop singing to emotional croons, illustrating excellent pitch ranges, while Ryan O’Connor’s drumming is textbook pop rock. The energy doesn’t stop on Controversy and if it doesn’t get your foot tapping, you may need to get your head checked.

I give Controversy Loves Company an 8 (out of 10). Beware, because Chicago has hatched yet another household name.

Suggested Listening: “The Ultimate Cover Up,” “It’s too Late” and “Lawyers”
