(3 out of 5 stars)This movie featuring Nicholas Cage, Julianne Moore, and Jessica Biel was completely unfairly thrown between the spring and summer movie schedule and was lost on the trash heap, yet this movie was actually good. What makes someone see Ghost Rider, but not Next? This movie reminds us of Groundhog Day, Déjà Vu, Paycheck and countless other time bending type movies, but shows us that it exceeds the other action movies tenfold. I guess you now know how I feel about Déjà Vu and Paycheck.
Next…Nicholas Cage plays his character with much more enthusiasm and feeling than any moment in Ghost Rider. He provides a similar action of his National Treasure type movies, and reminds us that Ben Affleck was the wrong choice in Paycheck. This is a Phillip K. Dick short story as was Paycheck, Minority Report, and others. Julianne Moore fits great as the head of the FBI team needing Cage’s assistance, and Biel is great as the love interest.
Next…The DVD extras tell how Cage added the use of the Grand Canyon to Biel’s character, as well as the magician to his character, exactly the right moves for the movie. It would have been flat and unrealistic without it as long as you can get past the fact that he can see two minutes into the future. As a viewer, you’re supposed to ignore the improbability of that and have fun with the fact that he can do it.
Next…The director finds many ways to use the “what if” scenarios of two minutes into the future which provides fun for the audience, as well as some cool special effects for the filmmakers. The scene where there are many of Cage’s character searching his options in a boat is especially amusing and nicely done.
Next…this is a movie to be entertained by and enjoy, but it deserves more than it was given. If this movie was crap, I would have just written, this movie is crap…Next…But instead, what I’d rather say is, this movie was great, and when can I see the next chapter, the sequel, what’s Next…
