Hollywood is now touting Shia Lebeouf as the amazing new sensation. He was good in Transformers but really, what was so amazing about him in Disturbia and what was so amazing about this movie? Hopefully his sidekick will be as amusing as Justin Long’s character in Die Hard 4 and in the upcoming Indiana Jones 4.
Disturbia means "disturbing suburbs because of potential evil going on." As Shia’s character is holed up in his house, he becomes aware of the day to day goings on of the adjacent neighbors, and becomes curious about the very private neighbor played by David Morse. I hate to come down on David Morse, but he is really starting to play the same role in every one of his supporting parts. Remember 16 Blocks – he was the “is he or isn’t he” bad cop, and now in Disturbia, he is the “is he or isn’t he” bad guy neighbor.
Disturbia is almost like Scooby Doo (ed. spoiler alert) with David Morse’s character saying to Shia’s character that if he wouldn’t have been spying, him and his two little friends would have never known he was privately killing people and storing them under his house. I’m waiting for him to say, “you meddling kids and that dog of yours!” And then Scooby saying Scooby Dooby Doo! Or in this case, Shia stating Shia Dia Doo!
This movie attempts to give you heart and give Shia a troubled past with a dead father, but really, a year later, he’s going to punch his teacher and get house arrest. Lame. And then Carrie Anne Moss doing her best impression of having no emotion at all. I can’t figure out what critics liked about this movie. It was a definite rental, no question about that.
