Danko Jones – Sleep is the Enemy

A metaphorical album about women being a drug, inspired by insomnia and filled with huge melodies and some arena-worthy guitar slinging? Now that I have your attention, let me introduce you to Danko Jones, a Canadian power-rock trio that has toured with Nickelback (and I’m really trying to forgive Danko for that). Case in point; if your band lands a tour with Nickelback, you’re doing all right.

Admittedly, when I heard Danko Jones’ previous album We Sweat Blood, I wasn’t all too impressed, but with their newest endeavor Sleep is the Enemy, I’m a believer. Sleep is the band’s third album and simply put, it’s no frills rock and roll. It points toward the classics like AC/DC or Motley Crue, yet maintains a modern big rock sound that is sure to get people energized.

The album opens with “Sticky Situation,” a song that is sure to get listeners off their asses and moving around, while “Invisible” and “Natural Tan” grind along like a freight train complete with solid guitar licks. “Baby Hates Me” will get people singing along, while “Don’t Fall in Love” is poppy, yet not sugarcoated to the point of tooth decay.

Overall, Danko Jones is making some noise in this world we call rock and roll and I give Sleep is the Enemy a 7 (out of 10).

Suggested Listening: “She’s Drugs,” “Invisible” and “Sleep is the Enemy”
