Cold Water Mystic may just be getting started in their young career as a band, but are quickly turning heads in just over a year. These guys, who hail from Brookfield, Illinois seek to take the world by storm by using the thriving Chicago bar scene as their platform to go farther. With a truly unique sound that blends 311 with Sublime and delivers something individualistic, it's only a matter of time before Cold Water Mystic grace national magazine covers and have kids playing air guitar in their bedrooms.
Popular Underground Magazine (PUM): To get to know you guys better, what are your backgrounds?
Cold Water Mystic (CWM): We’ve all been musicians for about 12 years, mostly metal bands previously. Band members span from age 19 to 27. Marty (the youngest) joined the band last and on a whim. [Our] first show played was last December at Fitzgerald's.
PUM: Where did “Cold Water Mystic” come from and what does it mean?
CWM: [It was] created by Dan, one day while hanging out and partying he coined the phrase “Cold Water Mystic” and from there on out it stuck.
PUM: What are the band’s influences?
CWM: Sublime, Incubus, 311, Snoop, Jimi Hendricks, P-funk… the list goes on.
PUM: Who created the music?
CWM: It was basically a collaboration. The guitar player brings the music and the lyrics are all a combined effort.
PUM: What does your music mean?
CWM: “Sex, drugs, and alcohol” Basically, the lyrics are stories either of our personal experiences or people that we know around us.
PUM: I have to ask, how was it to perform at House of Blues?
CWM: Amazing. There were no words to describe it.
PUM: What is your ultimate goal?
CWM: To take over the world one bar at a time!
