Built to Spill – You in Reverse

Built to Spill is not really a band to find oneself rocking out to, rather a band to get high to.  Think the White Stripes meet Mars Volta by means of Pink Floyd.  You in Reverse relies more on musical textures than vocals to awe the audience.

The album opens with the mellow, hippie rock track “Goin’ Against Your Mind,” which will get the toes tapping and is complete with airy guitar licks.  “Conventional Wisdom” and “Mess With Time” are two of the more upbeat and poppy tracks on the album, while everything else is more jam rock and groove tracks.

The musicianship seems solid and some of the lyrics, like those found on “Traces” are sophisticated.  This reviewer probably wouldn’t run out to the store and buy this album and that’s not to say it’s bad.  Just not my thing.  I give You in Reverse by Built to Spill a 5.5 (out of 10).

Suggested Listening: “Going Against Your Mind” and “Mess With Time”
