Boys Night Out - Trainwreck
Typically, I’m not a huge fan of concept albums, but Trainwreck, the most recent endeavor by Boys Night Out is probably one of the best concept albums I’ve ever heard. The story in a nutshell goes like this; a man is plagued by terrible and realistic dreams, which one night drives him to murder his wife in his sleep. The album then follows this man’s loss of his lover, is spiral into insanity, his abuse of substances and his inevitable death. The song titles on Trainwreck are all one-word descriptions of this man’s horrific journey. “Dreaming” describes the murder scene, while “Waking” illustrates this man waking up and realizing what he has done. By the time the album reaches “Purging,” this man is in the hospital, trying to take his own life. “Relapsing” is a partly female sung song, which sound like this man and his wife are unknowingly speaking to each other. Obviously, “Dying” is illustrates this man’s grotesque death, but not before recapitulating the entire story. Overall Boys Night Out haven’t changed their musical style too much. Songs like “Disintegrating” and “Sentencing” are upbeat punky sounding tracks, while “”Purging” parallels the topic with a heavy, dark melody. I give Trainwreck a 9 (out of 10). I think creating a concept album like this was a huge undertaking for Boys Night Out and illustrates a major rise in lyrical and musical maturity. The story line would make one helluva movie.
