Bon Jovi places a country edge to their package of rock n roll. Mostly, it bores me to tears. The two singles, “Lost Highway” and “Make a Memory” are great and a detour from typical Jovi fare like “Have a Nice Day,” “Bad Medicine,” "You Give Love a Bad Name" and “Runaway,” but the band tried something different and that gives then a ‘E’ for effort.
Seriously, in Bon Jovi’s heyday, their 80s rock was the best and for the most part has outlived bands like Motley Crue and Poison. They’ve matured and grew with the times knowing that hits like “Livin on a Prayer” wouldn’t be as well received now if it was new as it was then and continues to live today. But country is not their style.
To say that this is a country album would be incorrect. It has country sounds and country inspired songs, and even though mellow in much of the CD, it is more adult contemporary than anything. Some steel guitar is used but sparingly. There are even some songs that use that old Jovi-synth used in “Bad Medicine” and it is out of place on this CD.
I give Lost Highway a 4 (out of 10). If you want Bon Jovi, this isn’t your CD. Slippery When Wet and New Jersey will do just fine.
