  The Darjeeling Limited
(2 out of 5 stars)

Another movie by the eccentric Wes Anderson tells the tale of three brothers putting their relationship back together on a train that presents them a spiritual journey on the way to possibly seeing their long lost mother. It’s a movie that one would enjoy if they like Wes Anderson movies, and would probably hate if they do not.

Wes Anderson films are all the same, an eccentric family with problems. I personally don’t get it, and it just feels like the characters are too eccentric to have depth because of the oddity of each character is what is focused on. Owen Wilson is the best of the cast with Adrien Brody doing a respectable job. Jason Schwartzman basically can play one character, which is perfect for an Anderson film, an eccentric person. Schwartzman truly does his best job in the far superior I Heart Huckabees.

A movie like this has so little to it and not in a good way as in the movie Once. This movie needs more to survive and halfway through I really stopped caring if the brothers would reconnect and if they would see their mother. A good movie makes you care about the characters, this one does not.

The movie provides a small window to the Indian culture in Asia, but mostly makes fun of and magnifies the stereotypes that most people think of these cultures with goofy turbans and snakes being sold on the street. It’s almost a mockumentary of the area when in fact this movie could have been told in any setting – to make India the spiritual place did not do anything to enhance the movie.

Bottom line, only take the train ride if you enjoy the movies of Wes Anderson.
