The Bourne Ultimatum

(3 out of 5 Stars)

One of the best trilogies that never had to be a trilogy.  Each movie is stand alone although it does bring small plot points of the first and second movies.  This series is much like James Bond in how it doesn’t rely on the previous movies to create a brand new plot.

Matt Damon is great as usual as the title character, Jason Bourne.  It is interesting to know that Bourne was once a bad guy spy, and now is a badass who only wants good.  Damon makes you believe in this transformation.  The great David Strathairn plays the bad guy and Joan Allen continues her role reversal from the second movie as one who is seeking the truth along with Bourne.

What amazes me most about these movies is how little dialogue there is and how an amazingly filmed action can create an understandable plot and entertaining movie, not to mention a quality film where you see truly developed characters within a summer movie blockbuster.  Movies of this quality rarely open in the summer and certainly are not blockbuster quality films, but blockbuster popcorn films like Independence Day, Star Wars, Xmen, etc.

Bourne can come back for a fourth and it would be a treat.  The best way to honor such a great set of films is to do exactly what the film does itself, a moment of silence.
