  Reign Over Me
(2.5 out of 5 stars)

Starring Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle, Reign Over Me is a story of two broken guys using friendship to heal their wounds. Sandler’s character has lost his wife and three kids in one of the planes that crashed in 9/11 and Cheadle is becoming distant from his wife due to his general unhappiness with life and his lack of communication with his wife.

For Adam Sandler fans; know that this movie is 100% a drama. There is little to no comedy. The only comedy may come from a brief moment to lighten the mood of the movie. This is a very serious dark movie about how loss can bring someone into some pretty dark places. Sandler’s character is hurt so much by the death of his family that for four years he has ignored any contact with other family members and refused to even think about the loss of his family, by shutting himself in, ending his occupation as a dentist and keeping alone.

In some odd way, Cheadle’s character starts understanding his own downfalls with his marriage due to the time he spends with Sandler’s. They have dinner, play video games, and watch movies. Cheadle wants to talk about the past but that only infuriates Sandler. This movie digs deep into how tough it is to love by allowing the other person to be ready to live. Sandler actually out-acts Cheadle in this movie bringing heart and struggle out of his character.

A movie like this is always subject to being slow or boring, and at times this one is, but the movie uses music as a background to keep the pace of the movie going. I don’t completely understand the movie’s title, but did enjoy the credits rolling with a Pearl Jam song, "Reign Over Me."

This is an ok movie, one that is emotional, but not to the point of affecting the viewers heartstrings. It is nice to see Sandler play a real person, and I wouldn't mind seeing him take a stab at it again. This is a nice lazy day film. One that passes the time, but ultimately does give you much in return.
