Okay, so I had friends and family members asking me, "Why the hell would you go see Marilyn Manson?" To which, I would answer, "Why the hell not?" I've been into music for quite a number of years now and Manson is one of the shows that I had yet to catch. It's really not a show it's more of a spectacle. Even from the guidelines set forth in the photo pit... The typical rule of thumb for concert photography is, "the first three songs, NO FLASH." Got it. For Manson it was the first song, no flash, get the hell out! Okay, no problem. I can deal with that!
Manson takes the stage, no sooner did the music began he comes out to the catwalk, at which I am perched beside and he immediately sprays Bud Select all over me, my camera and the first three rows of screaming fans. Cool, no problem, I can deal with that. I suppose that's better than getting nipple blood on my Canon Rebel right? I mean, didn't he used to cut himself on stage?
For the most part, Manson's show is like seeing him perform all of his hits. A person really tends to forget how popular this guy really is. Whether it was "The Beautiful People" or "Rock is Dead" a song that was featured on the original The Matrix soundtrack, Manson did not dissapoint. Even a song that I wasn't that familiar with like "We're From America" and "Wow" off his most recent record The High End of Low kept me interested and intrigued. I would have liked to have heard more of Manson's old material, but that is probably just me being naive as a fan of his old music.
And let's talk about the fans. Manson draws probably one of the most demographically diverse groups of people I have ever seen in my life. From the preppy kid with the all to tight shirt to the goth chick who made her outfit with the help of a rusty pair of scissors, the scene provided some excellent people watching opportunities.
If you are a fan of metal / industrial metal, and have not seem Marilyn Manson, I would recommend it. Even if you are not quite into that scene, I would still check him out. It's well worth the money.
Oh, and in closing, remember how I said I was sprayed with Manson's Bud Select? Well, on the ride home I began feeling quite ill. By the following day I had a full out cold / flu. Three days later, I heard a report on the local hard rock radio station that Manson had postponed some shows because of a probable case of Swine Flu... I'm not saying I had the Swine Flu; I never even went to the doctor, but I did think it was an interesting correlation.
