The Gainesville, Florida based
ska punkers Less Than Jake celebrate
emancipation from their major label confines
with the release of GNV FLA on their own
Sleep It Off Records. GNV FLA marries
the band’s ska roots with their modern day pop
flair, and in the end Less Than Jake sound
“real,” not forced to do anything other than
what they want to.
“Does the Lion City Still Roar?,”
is by far one of the most addictive tracks on
this record, complete with punk infused drums
and horn harmonics reminiscent of tracks off
Losing Streak. “Settling Son” grinds along
with hyper-fast drums and a dizzying guitar
line, while the horn heavy “Summon Monsters”
also proves that the band are still in touch
with their roots.
Topically, Less Than Jake tackle
issues that anyone can relate to. “Handshake
Meet Pokerface” discusses the chasing of the
American dream, while “Abandon Ship” yearns for
seeing past life’s daily struggles.
With production efforts being
provided by Matt Allison (Alkaline Trio, Rise
Against), Less Than Jake give fans both old and
new something to enjoy. Their previous effort
In With the Out Crowd was a sleeper.
GNV FLA is their redemption.
Suggested Listening: “Golden Age
of My Negative Ways,” “The Space They Can’t
Touch” and “Does the Lion City Still Roar?”
