(2 out of 5 stars)The kids go to summer camp! Really, it’s not that great. Remember how American Pie decided to go from high school to summer vacation and it was a rehashing of the first one? High School Musical 2 does the same.
The original was Disney channel in style, but choreographed in an amazingly impressive way that even I chose to sit through it. I figured if the first was impressive that the second would give me some even better, newer, fresher choreography and humor at the stereotypes of high school, instead it was like watching a boring version of the first.
It’s time for a side note: Zac Efron; seriously, what is so impressive? He has good looks and can dance to what he is taught. Have you seen the kid’s acting? It is forced and not real. Reminds me when models turn actors just because they have good looks – like Tom Welling of Smallville fame (Justin Hartley as Green Arrow completely out acted him). It is rare that actors like Mark Wahlberg can go from a Calvin Klein underwear model and hip-hop star to serious impressive actor. The Zac Efron phase will cool down and he will end up as the next Joey Lawrence; high school pin-up who is no longer heard of 10 years later (heck, maybe even five).
So, if you want a movie with morals, this one has it, and I applaud it for it, but if you want one you can watch with your kids and not be hurting sitting through it, watch the original, that basketball dance is awesome!
