(5 Out of 5)
For those
who don’t know, allow us to bring you up to
speed. Yes, Foxboro Hot Tubs is the alter-ego
side project of Green Day encompassing all three
band members with the addition of Jason Freese,
Jason White and Kevin Preston. No, it doesn’t
sound like Green Day and yes it completely kicks
ass!
Now, with
the basics out of the way, let’s discuss Stop
Drop and Roll. It’s a record that is simply
genius. Some have called it a filler between
Green Day albums, but generally “filler” albums
suck and Stop Drop and Roll is proof that
the core members of Green Day are masters of
their craft when it comes to music.
The album is
simple and thematically, the it’s a throwback to
the rock and roll of the sixties with buzzing
guitars, distorted vocals and a gritty overall
feeling. The title track features Armstrong as
the snotty punk barking vocals as if he were
high, while “Red Tide” is a gentle almost Beach
Boys flavored track. “Broadway” is complete
with whiskey soaked vocal tones and really the
only track on the record that sounds like
Green Day, although “The Pedestrian” could have
probably found a slot on American Idiot.
There’s even an obvious nod to Johnny Cash on 27th
Ave. Shuffle."
It really doesn’t matter if the
Foxboro Hot Tubs are simply a satirical side
project allowing Green Day some breathing room
to plot their next mega record because Stop
Drop and Roll is simply good music.
