(3.5 out of 5 stars)
The
previews make Eagle Eye out to be some type of spy thriller
or some sort of movie where a secret agency is making you do certain
things to get what they want. Well, that is not exactly what this
movie is about, but it does not matter, it is still a full blown
action movie with explosions around every corner. The action is what
makes this film fun.
The
plot is a bit shaky. They sort of prove how these two can be told
what to do every step of the way, but it still seems a little
unrealistic. No matter, Shia LeBeouf and Michelle Monaghan do fine
in their roles as the puppets of the criminal mastermind. Billy Bob
Thornton and Michael Chiklis provide support as the agents tracking
them down. This
movie is not about the acting, it is about the action, but it is
still nice seeing these actors making an attempt at making their
roles important.
The
problem with this movie is the last five minutes. It tries to create
this monumental climax yet ends up being frivolous and absurd. At
this point, the viewer knows who the mastermind behind the ordeal
is, but they are waiting for our heroes to solve the problem. With a
back story that screams redemption and family dedication and finding
your purpose, this movie sinks like a dud and provides no tying of
those thematic loose ends.
Eagle Eye unfortunately does not have the full originality it
needs to be part of my collection of movies. I, Robot
provides a similar yet more compelling story with the same amount of
enticing action. There was more heart in Robot; which is what
the filmmakers missed in Eagle Eye. They had written the
idea, but did not execute it. So, watch this one for the action and
do not expect much more, but rest assured, you will be fully
entertained by the non-stop no frills excitement.
