Way to Normal
just does not have the catchy tunes or
uniqueness of Folds’ previous efforts. Previous
albums provided us with radio anthems “Gone,”
serene ballads “Brick” and fun pop tunes “Rockin
the Suburbs.” Being known for his piano heavy
tunes and unique sound, Folds chooses to mostly
play it safe and create a bunch of piano songs
that, for the most part, do not stand out at all
which makes it hard to give the CD multiple
listens. Sometimes, the album becomes too
experimental leaving the listener perplexed.
One song that is a bit closer to
showing Folds at his best is “You Don’t Know
Me,” a duet with Regina Spektor. She seems like
a great fit for Folds, but the song, although a
bit original due to Spektor’s voice, falls a bit
flat with too much repetition. “Bitch Went Nuts”
is probably the best song musically, but still
is not catchy enough and does not even become a
distant memory.
If you are looking for the fun
Ben Folds, who even had a bit of an edge, go for
his albums with Ben Folds Five or Rockin' the
Suburbs. Leave this experimental album at
home.
