(3.5 Out of 5)
When my idiot husband first came
home and asked me to review a CD by some girl I
never had heard of; I thought it was going to be
angry Alanis Morrisette chick music.
While it was definitely chick
music, it was much happier than I expected.
Kind of like a mix between Paramore and Pink.
Becca has Pink’s edginess, and Paramore’s hard
rock vibe. So I was presently surprised,
especially with “Turn up the Stereo,” and
“Guilty Pleasure.”
“Guilty Pleasure” put the
edginess on full display. Becca broke the model
of the rest of the disk by talking about how she
was going to hook up with this guy regardless of
his being in a relationship. It was a very
different dynamic from anything else on
Alive!! and it was also a pleasant surprise;
kind of like opening a Target box on Christmas
and seeing a pair of Christian Louboutin
stilettos.
“Turn up the Stereo,” however,
was very much the Pink aspect of Becca. I
rolled the windows down, turned the music up,
and wasn’t even remotely embarrassed to rock out
to the song. I was hoping people would notice
me singing out loud, not like with Britney
Spears where I would hope no one would notice
(although on a side note, I totally rock out to
Brit too).
Overall I think that this is a
good album that showcases Becca’s fantastic
voice, although not necessarily her diverse
talents. I wish more songs were in the SHIBUYA
(upbeat) tempo that was a little faster paced,
and a little less ballady. Also, while her
voice is great, her handlers need to not use any
enhancements to her choruses. It was
counterproductive, and honestly detracted,
instead of improving all of the songs that was
done on… which sadly, was far too many of them.
This was a good showing, and
Becca is very much Alive!!, although she
could still use a shock or two to the heart.
