311 - Uplifter

(5 Out of 5)

What is it with music critics today?  Seriously, I know I'm way late writing this review of 311's ninth studio record (it hit shelves in June), but some of the reviews of Uplifter that I have read simply make me angry.  Reviewer's saying, "Awe, 311 has nothing new to offer" or "Just the same old 311."  One reviewer claimed he was going to copy and paste his 1995 review of 311's Self-Titled record for Uplifter!  Really?  Who cares if the record is all about immediacy and really has no depth.  Since when does that hurt the ratings.  Aren't we always about instant gratification?

Anyway, enough of me ranting about other reviewers.  When I first listened to Uplifter, I can honestly say I wasn't immediately gratified, yet upon listening to it more and more, it became my stand out record of the summer, if not the year.  For the first time since From Chaos, I feel like 311 have delivered an album that is simply a joy to listen to.  It's fun, it's got energy and contrary to what some reviewers say, it does have some new twists and turns.  "Something Out of Nothing," has the signature 311 feel with vocal tones that could parallel Maroon 5.  Tell me where we'd hear that in 1995?

I would say that 311 has evolved over the years.  Nick Hexum's vocals go from a deep groove on "India Ink" to a poppy flair on "Hey You."  It doesn't sound like Hexum inserting melodic vocal croons and SA rapping to keep up.  In fact, SA does more actual singing on Uplifter than fans may be used to.  The record has a great balance of everything that 311 fans have come to love about the band.  They've been doing this for nearly 20 years now, why reinvent themselves now?  Just keep perfecting the craft!

For those of you fed up with winter and feel like a little California sun, just throw on some "Daisy Cutter" or "Jackpot" and it'll be sunny in your eyes anyway.

Suggested Listening: "Something Out of Nothing," "India Ink" and "Mix it Up"
