  30 Days of Night
(2.5 out of 5 stars)

A vampire movie! Interesting idea to portray this in the town of Barrow, Alaska even though it was actually filmed in New Zealand. You know that ultimately the characters must outlast the darkness to live. In the first 30 minutes, almost the entire town is killed by these vampires, which makes the viewer question if anyone in a town of 152 people could really last 30 days.

Even worse, the town is portrayed incorrectly, as 4,500 people actually live there, and the nights are filled with the northern lights which are never portrayed in the movie. Also, there are actually 51 days where the sun never peaks above the horizon. If you’re more interested in Barrow than the movie, check the following : http://www.kingeider.net/king5.html

So assuming the characters can last for 30 days, doesn’t the writer and director realize that the first sunrise will be a bit of a blip, not a full fledged sunrise? The setting is all wrong, and even though it appears film crews filmed at night, the lighting director sure created a bright darkness, which was a mistake. If it is dark, and the lights are also out in the town, this movie should have been darker and these vampires should have been able to surprise from the shadows.

Josh Hartnett is the lead and does well with his part, as the writer tries to create emotion with a past broken relationship. Unfortunately, everyone seems too scared or bold to put themselves together to fight these monsters. Are all these people really this brave?

And now we come to the vampires… This movie has vampires who must have crossed the Bering Sea. We don’t know how they got there, or why they speak an unknown language (for some reason we even got a few translation lines, even though it wasn’t necessary – we get it; the monsters are there to eat people)

All in all, this is a typical monster movie that is marginally entertaining. Some people die, some people live, and our lead character gets to be a hero. Nothing special, but worth a watch if you don’t have anything better to do.
