1408 is a Stephen King short story made into a movie. King stories are hit or miss. This was one somewhere in between. John Cusack plays the guy that goes crazy and Samuel Jackson plays the unusual, “who is he really,” character. This is kind of a haunted house type movie. The story follows a writer, Cusack, who does stories on supposed haunted houses even though he as a writer does not believe in ghosts or hauntings. He makes a living off of telling people’s stories. He is staying at a hotel where room 1408 is supposedly haunted.
This movie is much like Cusack’s Identity, where the viewer is trying to determine if Cusack is crazy, if he is a good guy, or if he is a bad guy. In 1408, the viewer is trying to determine if Cusack is crazy, dreaming, or really seeing ghosts. Samuel Jackson’s character sits by showing you how good Jackson is at playing Samuel Jackson.
If you’re looking for a typical suspense movie, this one is it. It keeps you guessing, as well as giving you the always important backstory how our hero has some horrible past that haunts him and maybe that is what is really driving him crazy. You’ll get to see some cool special effects along the way as well.
Without giving it away, you’ll likely know the truth before it ends, and if you’re looking to get scared, just stay in your own room 1408, because really, staying home to watch this movie makes more sense than seeing it at a theater.
